Salah guide

Salah is the most important act of worship after the shahadah. Learn it correctly, from a trusted teacher, with evidence.

Salah is the pillar of the religion

Why salah comes first

Salah is the second pillar of Islam, the first deed a servant is held to account for, and the connection between a Muslim and Allah five times a day.

"Islam is built on five: the testimony that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving zakah, Hajj, and fasting Ramadan."

Narrated by al-Bukhari (8) and Muslim (16)

"The first thing a servant will be held to account for on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is sound, he will have succeeded and prospered; if it is lacking, he will have failed and lost."

Narrated by at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i and Abu Dawud; graded sahih by al-Albani

"Indeed, prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing."

Qur'an, al-'Ankabut (29): 45

"Successful indeed are the believers: those who are humble in their prayer."

Qur'an, al-Mu'minun (23): 1-2

Three things that matter in every salah

Salah is accepted and perfected when it is done right in three ways. Each one has its own evidence.

1

On time

Every prayer has a fixed time. Praying within its time is among the most beloved deeds to Allah.

"Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at fixed times."

Qur'an, an-Nisa (4): 103

Ibn Mas'ud asked the Prophet ﷺ: "Which deed is most beloved to Allah?" He said: "Prayer at its proper time."

Narrated by al-Bukhari (527) and Muslim (85)

2

Correct words

Know what you recite and recite it properly. Al-Fatihah is a pillar of every rak'ah, and the Qur'an is recited slowly and clearly.

"There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (al-Fatihah)."

Narrated by al-Bukhari (756) and Muslim (394)

"And recite the Qur'an with measured recitation."

Qur'an, al-Muzzammil (73): 4

3

Correct movements

Pray the way the Prophet ﷺ prayed, and give every movement its calm: stand, bow, prostrate and sit until you are settled (tuma'ninah).

"Pray as you have seen me pray."

Narrated by al-Bukhari (631)

The Prophet ﷺ saw a man pray hurriedly and told him three times: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." He then taught him to be calm in every movement.

Narrated by al-Bukhari (757) and Muslim (397)

"O you who believe! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles."

Qur'an, al-Ma'idah (5): 6

"Allah does not accept the prayer of any of you if you break your wudu, until you perform wudu."
